Professional Development Grant
In honor of longtime member Ed Swietnicki and his unwavering commitment to the New York Financial Writers Association, the board established an annual $5,000 fund in his name. This fund is devoted to furthering members’ commitment to financial journalism through grants that are available annually. Under this new program, NYFWA members are eligible to receive up to $1,000 for any course or conference that will aid in furthering their career as a financial writer. Applications for Swietnicki grants are accepted on a rolling basis from September through June. Applicants must have an existing NYFWA memberships for a minimum of 5 years. Rules/submission requirements
Eligibility for Grant Application:
With the exception of current board members, all NYFWA active members in good standing will be eligible to apply for a grant.
Grant Award Guidelines:
A maximum $1,000 grant will be awarded to any one member, with the specific amount to be determined by the grant committee. Grants will be paid directly to the organization sponsoring the course/conference a member has applied for, and under no circumstances will a grant ever be paid directly to a member.
Grant Application Requirements:
To be considered for a grant, members must submit a copy of their current resume, along with a statement regarding the particular event they are interested in attending and an explanation of the way they believe it will enhance professional development or advance their career. Members must also submit documentation to verify the event, such as a brochure or course catalog.
Travel Expense Policy:
Travel costs are not covered by the grant.
Feedback Requirement for Recipients:
Grant recipients will be required to share feedback about their experience with the organization. (This will be in the form of a brief talk at an NYFWA event such as a monthly drinks night, or possibly the annual membership meeting.)
Reapplication Restrictions:
Grant recipients will not be eligible to apply to this program again until five years after the date of their last award.
